There is a student with a learning disability who spent nearly eight years— from kindergarten through seventh grade—being overlooked, labeled, and written off as a “no-hope” case. He comes from a family living in poverty, where his parents were willing to skip meals just to support his education.
Today, after almost two years of steady support, he’s thriving in an advanced academic program. He describes this transformation as “love.”
When I look back on our journey together, I don’t feel like I did anything extraordinary. When his mother first approached me and mentioned he had an IEP (Individualized Education Program), I didn’t even know what that was. All I knew was that I needed to give him whatever support he needed to learn, grow, and believe in himself.
Seeing the transformation of this student, his former teachers had mixed reactions. Some were shocked—even angry—believing that such a change was impossible. Others expressed a desire to meet with me to understand what had happened and how such progress was made.
Miracles happen every day—even if we can’t always see the change right away, it’s happening. I just wish more students had the same chance he did.
